"Cor Baby, That's Really Me!" (03/29/2004) Rock & Pop Otway, John, Cherry Red (UK)Released to coincide with the publication of Otway's Cor Baby, That's Really Me autobiography, the album of the same name is an adequate, but distinctly underwhelming, career-spanning compilation, tracing him from the halcyon days when he truly believed he had a chance of making it, to those during which he took advantage of the knowledge that he probably wasn't going to. It's a subtle difference, but a crucial one, that renders the first dozen or so tracks an absolute joy to relive, but the remainder more of an acquired taste. Opening with one side of the single Otway and long-term partner Wild Willy Barrett self-released in 1971, "Gypsy," and marching on through a session with early mentor Pete Townshend, the album peaks early with the burst of activity surrounding -- and immediately following -- the 1977 hit single "Really Free." A lushly orchestrated version of the first album's "Geneve," highlighted by a breathtaking Snowy White guitar solo, and the original 1978 45 version of "Baby's in the Club" both peel off long-forgotten 45s and portray Otway not as the madcap nut of subsequent renown, but as a genuinely thoughtful songwriter whose idiosyncratic vocalizing was no more bizarre in the late '70s than Bob Dylan's was at the outset of his career. Indeed, of the myriad comparisons that Otway has endured over the years, if Cor Baby, That's Really Me! had closed in 1978, that would be the most accurate of them all. Unfortunately, it doesn't. 1980's "DK 50/80" single ushers in an era of increasingly self-conscious humor and wackiness which, while it certainly offers an entertaining time, also suffers from a forced jollity that utterly undermines the gems that preceded it. As a roundup of Otway's oddness from beginning to (at that time) end, Cor Baby, That's Really Me! is unimpeachable. As a testament to a man who could have been Britain's best-ever bard, however...ah, but that probably wasn't the point, was it? ~ Dave Thompson

"Soul [Book & CD]" (10/05/1999) R&B Various Artists, Friedman FairgfaxSOUL is packaged with a hardcover book. A pretty boring album of hits that everybody probably already has, by artists everybody knows. The only plus is that there are no shorties (the cuts are full length), and it even includes both sides of the Isley Brothers' "That Lady." The problem here is that you can listen to any classic soul radio program and hear these songs on a daily basis. Friedman/Fairfax tried to make this unit unique by including a book, but it's what's in the grooves that count -- and these grooves contain an unimaginative collection of the same old, same old. ~ Andrew Hamilton
