"Amphetamine [Bonus Tracks]" (08/10/2004) Rock & Pop Way, Pete, Majestic RockPersonnel includes: Pete Way (vocals, bass); Walt James (guitar); Scott Phillips (drums). Recorded at Rockfield Studios, Wales, United Kingdom. This 2001 outing by hard-rock guitarist Pete Way presents a set of revved-up tunes. The 2004 re-release features three additional tracks. Personnel: Pete Way (vocals, bass guitar); Walt James (guitar, background vocals); Scott Phillips (drums). Recording information: Pete Way's Home Studio, Columbus, OH (09/1999); Rockfield Studios, Monmouth, Wales (09/1999). Chronicling a dark dalliance with drugs, Amphetamine, the debut solo album by UFO/Waysted bassist Pete Way, was bound to surprise fans of his previous work when it originally surfaced in 2001. Recorded with the help of guitarist Walt James and drummer Scott Phillips, the disc marked Way's introduction as a vocalist, revealing his personal demons amid a dark, raw, noisy backdrop that comes closer to the punk/metal efforts of Mot?rhead and the heroin-plagued '90s grunge movement as evidenced by tracks like "That's Tuff" and "American Kid (What a Shame)." As a vocalist, Way is only passable, and the mere eight studio cuts offered make Amphetamine seem a little light on material -- a notion that isn't helped much by the fact that this 2004 reissue houses three bonus tracks, all of which are home demos of three albums' original cuts. ~ John D. "Amphetamine Reptile Peel Sessions [PA]" (05/02/1992) Rock & Pop Various Artists, Dutch East India TradingProducers: Dale Griffin (tracks 1-4, 7-8); Mike Robinson (tracks 5-6). Engineers: M. Engles, F. Kay (tracks 1-2); M. Engles, A. Meeson (tracks 3-4); M. Robinson, L. Soft (tracks 5-6); R. Debono, D. McArth (tracks 7-8). Recorded for the John Peel BBC Radio show in the summer of 1991. Personnel: John Mohr, Sean McDonnell, John Lachapelle, Page Hamilton (vocals, guitar); Shannon Selberg (vocals); Scott Kleber, Thor Eisentrager, Mark Zablocki, Peter Mengede (guitar); John Leamy, Tony Oliveri, Mike Greenlees, John Stanier (drums). Recording information: 06/03/1990-05/28/1991. As can be expected from a label with a one-word slogan reading "noise," Amphetamine Reptile is home to an assemblage of singularly dissonant punk rock bands utterly devoted to scabrous music. Amphetamine Reptile Peel Sessions contains selections recorded for the BBC by the label's biggest stars, and the results are, for the most part, predictable. The Cows set the tone with their covers of "You Are So Beautiful" and "How Dry I Am," both of which are complete with slurred vocals and grimy guitars. Helmet's two tracks are as brutal and tuneless as the rest of their oeuvre. Tar's contributions, one of which is an instrumental, both contain offbeat, complex structures and energetic playing, but are ultimately hampered by a lack of compelling melodies. Only Surgery really breaks from the pack with their gritty blues-rockers "Dear Sweet Laura" (an ode to Superchunk bassist Laura Ballance, available only on this collection) and "D-Nice." For the most part, though, the material is identical to standard Amphetamine Reptile fare, omitting some of the label's far more eccentric, unconventional acts such as Helios Creed. Ultimately, Amphetamine Reptile Peel Sessions will leave noise punk devotees satisfied, but has little to offer to casual fans. ~ Victor W. Valdivia
